Strike: Benue Workers Shut Offices, Markets, Schools

Benue State workers under the aegis of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) yesterday embarked on an indefinite strike action, resulting to a total shut down of offices, markets and schools.

This is coming on the heels of the state governments slashing of salaries of workers to settle the minimum wage of primary school teachers while the labour unions are insisting that Governor Gabriel Suswam must reverse the decision.
The workers are equally calling on the state government to refund excess tax deduction from its members since 2011 and refund all deductions made in respect of the National Housing Fund.
Yesterday, in Makurdi the state capital and across the 23 local governments, all government offices were not opened for work, just as the popular modern market that is managed by government was also locked. Customers and shop owners were not allowed entry into the place.
The situation caused untold hardship to people of the agrarian state.
as economic activities were hampered in certain places. Some students and office workers that unknowingly arrived for work were pursued out of the places, just as the water Board authority could not supply water for public consumption.
The state chairman of NLC, comrade Simon Anchaver and the state head of service, Mr. Terna Ahua said yesterday that the strike action was in compliance with the grievances of the workers which government is yet to consider their light.
