MURDER: Court Remands 25-year-old For Killing Own Dad

A Jalingo Magistrate Court has remanded a 25-year-old, James Nicodemus Koknyom, of opposite Deeper Life Camp, Jalingo, for allegedly killing his father.

According to the first information report, the accused person, on August 1, 2014, intentionally knocked down his father, Mr. Nicodemus Koknyon, with a Toyota Hilux Van with registration No: DS 895GGE when the father refused to allow him to go out with the vehicle.
The FIR noted that on August 8, 2014, a case of culpable homicide was later transferred from the GRA Divisional Police Headquarters to criminal investigation departmen.
He (James) knocked him down and marched his (Nichodemus) head. As a result, he sustained an injury on his head and was rushed to the state specialist hospital, Jalingo, where he later died while on admission, the FIR said.
When the case came up for mention and the FIR was read to James, he said he understood the content of the FIR.
But the court held that it had no jurisdiction to ask the accused person if he had committed the offence or not, stressing that the court was only holding the accused on remand proceedings.
The police persecutor, Sergeant Tyondon, asked the court to fix another date to enable the police to complete investigation into the matter.
The court granted the application of the prosecutor and adjourned the case to September 3, 2014, for further mention and ordered that the accused be remanded in Jalingo Prison till then.
