The incident took placeon Tuesday, along theD.S.P Alameiseigha Road. It is a notorious red light district in the Yenagoa Local Government Area.
Bayelsa Police Command spokesman, Mr Alex Akhigbe, who confirmed the incident said a preliminary investigation into the incident has traced the family involved in the criminal act to Port Harcourt in Rivers.
“The details of the investigation are still sketchy, but the special unit of the police are on their way to effect the recovery of the baby, and to arrest the family that bought the child,” Akhigbe said to reporters. The baby, according to the police report was a day old, and sold to a family that resides in Port Harcourt by the mother, who is currently in police custody.Meanwhile, residents in the Bayelsacapital have raised alarm over the rising incidents of robbery and burglary by a criminal syndicate, with the use of a special powder suspected to be an anesthetic known as ketamine.
One of the victims, a staff member at the Niger Delta University Hospital in the Okolobiri area of the state, had his house broken into, vandalized, and all of his valuables, including laptop computers, stolen. What we noticed was a residue of white powdered substance by the window. The burglary-proof screen of the window were cut, and their foot prints were noticed on the powder. They must have blown into the house to make us fall into a deep sleep,” the victim, who spoke under the condition of anonymity to a SaharaReporters correspondent.
Akhigbe, said that the command has yet to get the report of such a development, but pledged that the police will take steps to curtail the trend, and nip the trend by a group of burglars in the bud.
